Situated about 10 kilometers southeast of Mandalay and 500 kilometers north of Yangon, Taunggyi, meaning ‘huge mountain’ in Burmese, is the fifth largest city of Myanmar and the capital center of Shan State, Eastern Myanmar. It is the home for over 205,000 residents, including people of Bamar, Intha, Pa-Oh, and Shan.

The Ancient City Of Kukku
The Ancient City Of Kukku in MyanmarThe land of Tribal Pagodas on the plain of mountain ranges, is about 26 miles from Taunggyi, Among the Pao Tribal villages, there lies an ancient city of Pagodas from 11th century, the ancient Pagodas, like bamboo shoots are prickly studded, and which some are in ruined. The designs of the pagodas are also different from Bagan. In the past there were more than four hundred thousand Stupas, and at present about four hundred Stupas can be seen in Kukku. Some sitting Stupas are decorated with fine glass mosaic and some are with fine plaster carvings. This place is now becoming one of the Tourist attraction in Shan State.

There are also ‘Hawnans” (palatial residences) where the Shan Sawbwas (Shan Chieftains) used to live can also be observed.

Air-Balloon Festival
Tazaungdaing Festival in Myanmar
In Taunggyi. the capital city of the Shan State. the people celebrate the Tazaungdine festival with Kahtein (offering of monk robes) as well as the releasing up fire-balloons into the sky. Balloons in the shape of elephant. ox. horse. water-buffalo. bird. pig. fish. owl and parrot are released. The Taunggyi festival is the biggest festival in the country. It is attended not only by Taunggyi Citizens but also by people from southern Shan State and many different races. Taungyi’s Kahtein tradition is amazing and worthy of reverence.

Taungyi Market

It is the most fascinating place to watch the daily life of the minorities and their activities. One will be un-forgettable to see the flock of the tribals or ethnic people who come down the market to sell their luscious vegetables, fruits, and flowers at every five days market.

How to get there

Myanmar Airways and Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways operate scheduled flights for tourists to Bagan/Nyaung Oo, Mandalay and Heho (Taunggyi) during tourist season. Tickets are available at the respective Airways offices in Yangon and major tourist centers By overland, Express Trains to Mandalay or Yangon stop at Thazi junction, from where one can take a regular train or bus to Taunggyi. Visitors are advised to check with Tourist Information Services for flight/ train/ bus schedules.
